Deserted, Forgotten, Suffering: Lamentations of Loss

To the west of Jerusalem there lies a rocky hill, just outside the Damascus gate. In the face of that hill is a cave that from ancient times was called the ‘grotto of Jeremiah.’ It is said that after Nebuchadnezzar’s annihilation of the holy city, Jeremiah fled there to write his lamentations. The sound of weeping that echoed from that cave made it clear that the destruction of Jerusalem has destroyed Jeremiah too.1
