Having FON...?

Submitted by Joe on June 30, 2006 - 3:43pm.

FONToday I discovered FON.

FON is a 'Global Community of people who share WiFi.' If you join FON, you can 'share excess bandwidth at home and roam the world for free,' and even make a bit of money from sharing your WiFi if you want to be a 'Bill' and 'milk your WiFi.'

Simply download their software to your router and your excess bandwith is (securely) shared with anyone else in the FON community. And if your router is not compatible then just buy one of their subsidised 'social routers' for €5/$5

Easy!

Haven't yet signed up for it - too, too busy! But it looks great, and could become fantastic as the FON WiFi community grows.

FON was founded by an Argentine philanthropist called Martin Varsavsky. What's particularly inspiring is that one of its aims is to cross the digital divide and make high speed internet access open to all without major financial obstacles.

Has anyone else heard of FON...? Use FON...? Part of the FON community...?

Let us all know your experiences and leave a comment!
